Italy’s prime ministerial candidate Giorgia Meloni shared a video of the rape of a Ukrainian woman on social media platform Twitter, which has been removed. A new prime minister is to be elected after Mario Draghi resigns. Giorgia Meloni is a staunch right-wing leader. Late on Sunday night, she shared a blurred video and wrote that she cannot keep silent about this dastardly incident. After deleting the video, she said on Twitter that the video she shared was originally posted on a newspaper’s website. Regarding sharing the video, she said that she did it to show solidarity with the victim.

Talking about Giorgia, she is in the race to become the first female Prime Minister of Italy. Elections will be held in Italy on 25 September. Giorgia Meloni is the leader of the political party ‘Brothers of Italy’ for the last eight years. She is considered the first right-wing leader after Benito Mussolini in 1922. Meloni has been a controversial face since entering politics. In 1996, in a TV interview, she described the fascist leader Mussolini as the best politician in the last 50 years.

Personal life of Giorgia
In the upcoming elections in Italy, she is in the fray with the issue of nationalism and Christianity. Talking about Meloni’s personal life, she was born in 1977 in Garbatella, Rome. She joined student politics in her teenage years. At the age of 15, she joined the student wing of the National Conservative Group. She created Gli Antenati, a group rallying against public education reforms. Later she also became a member of Rome. In 2016, she gave birth to her first and only child at the age of 39. Her partner is a journalist.

How has been the political journey
In 2006, at the age of 29, Meloni became the youngest deputy speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Italy’s parliament. Two years later, she became a minister in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the longest-serving ever. When she was 32, Berlusconi’s party merged with the center right group Forza Italia. The merger created a group called ‘The People of Freedom’, and Meloni became its vice president. In 2012, she created her own party ‘Brothers of Italy’. She became the head of the party in 2014. Since then she has been raising her voice against LGBTQI rights, gay marriage and immigration.
