On an average, every day 350 people in India are giving up their citizenship and taking citizenship of another country. It is not that people in the country are struggling with poverty and unemployment, but billionaires too are moving to other countries in large numbers.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, in response to a question asked in the Lok Sabha, said that about 9 lakh Indian people have given up citizenship between January 1, 2015 and September 30, 2021. According to this figure of the Union Minister, on an average 350 people have given up citizenship every day. Union Minister Nityanand Rai said that according to the current figures, a total of 1,33,83,718 Indian citizens are currently living abroad.

According to the figures of the Union Minister, 1,33,049 Indians had given up citizenship in the year 2017. 1,34,561 people had given up their citizenship in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019 and 1,11,287 Indians by September 30, 2021.

Which countries do Indians prefer to live in?
US is the first choice of Indians after leaving India. Significantly, 42 percent of the Indians who left the country have taken US citizenship and the second choice of Indians is Canada. Between 2017 and 2021, 91,000 Indians have adopted Canadian citizenship. The third choice of Indians is Australia, where 86,933 Indian people have adopted citizenship in the last 5 years. England again comes in this list where 66,193 Indians adopted citizenship.

Morgan Stanley Bank had released a data in the year 2018. According to which 23,000 Indian millionaires left the country between 2014-18. At the same time, a report by Global Wealth Migration Review found that around 5,000 Indian millionaires left India in the year 2020 alone and went abroad.

Henley & Partners, a UK-based international company that provides citizenship and visas to other countries, says that the number of Indians seeking citizenship of a country through golden visa is increasing rapidly. According to the Henley Global Citizens report, the number of Indians inquiring about citizenship rules increased by 54 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. At the same time, in 2020 also an increase of 63 percent was registered in this number compared to the year 2019.

Why are so many people giving up their Indian citizenship?

There are many important reasons for Indians giving up their citizenship of India. Insecurity, living standards, education, health services, and unemployment are very important reasons. Experts believe that Indian businessmen feel very insecure in India and the government has also failed to create such an environment so that they can feel safe and if we talk about the living standard, then there is no such facilities in India. and India’s education system is also one of the reasons why Indian citizens leave India. Along with this, unemployment has also increased in the country in recent years, due to which more people are moving to other countries.
