Badminton Association of India President Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced a prize money of Rs 1 crore to the Thomas Cup winning team. The Indian team created history today when they defeated defending champions Indonesia 3-0 to capture the coveted Thomas Cup trophy.
20 lakh prize for staff
Sarma also announced a prize money of Rs 20 lakh for the support staff. Sarma said, “It is a very proud moment for Indian badminton. We have won many individual victories but winning the Thomas Cup title is very special. It shows the great display of talent in the team. Gives full credit to the players and the coaching staff for giving their best for this.”
On the other hand, Union Minister Anurag Thakur has announced to give one crore rupees as a reward after this historic victory. Anurag Thakur said, “I, on behalf of myself and the Sports Ministry, declare a cash prize of Rs 1 crore for Team India for winning the Thomas Cup. I hope that the players will likewise enhance the glory of the tricolor.” The eyes of crores of Indian sports lovers were on this day. Millions of fans were anxious and worried about the result, but in all the three matches played in the final, India proved everyone wrong and achieved the distinction of becoming the champion for the first time.
