An incident of bursting of firecrackers and making caste slurs outside Indian hockey team player Vandana Katariya’s house after losing to Argentina in the semi-final match of women’s hockey at Tokyo Olympics has come to the fore. It was reported that soon after the match, two men from the upper caste gathered near her home and started hurling casteist remarks against her family.
The incident took place at the house of star player Vandana Katariya in Roshanabad village of Haridwar. Her brother Shekhar told Times of India, ‘We were all saddened by the team’s defeat. But we are proud of the fact that we lost fighting. Shortly after the match, firecrackers were heard outside our house. Going out and seeing, two upper caste youths of the village were dancing.
According to the complaint lodged with the police by Shekhar, when the family members came out of the house, the youths started dancing while bursting firecrackers and started making caste slurs. They said that the Indian women’s hockey team lost because of too many Dalit players in the team. The accused said that Dalits should be kept away from every sport, not only hockey.
According to the FIR, the accused insulted the family members and started dancing by taking off their shirts. SHO of Sidkul police station L. S. Butola said that one of the accused has been arrested on the basis of the complaint. The investigation is on in the matter.
