Renowned journalist Rana Ayyub was stopped at the Indian immigration from going to London on Tuesday evening. Rana Ayyub was about to take a flight to London from Mumbai International Airport on Tuesday evening to deliver a speech on the intimidation of journalists at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).
On being stopped from boarding a London flight, Rana Ayyub tweeted, “I was stopped today at the Indian immigration while I was about to board my flight to London to deliver my speech on the intimidation of journalists with @ICFJ. I was to travel to Italy right after to deliver the keynote address at the @journalismfest on the Indian democracy.”
The Washington-based non-profit, International Centre for Journalists, had invited Ms Ayyub to the UK for a discussion on online violence against women journalists. Ms Ayyub has often tweeted she faced online harassment and death threats from trolls
The International Center for Journalists reacted to the incident and expressed alarm at the ‘blatant legal harassment of Rana Ayyub by Indian authorities. “We demand India’s central government end its instigation and inflammation of attacks on Rana Ayyub, which risk turning the digital lynch mob into a murderous horde. She has been doxxed, repeatedly threatened with rape and murder, and she is legitimately afraid for her life,” the post said.
Let us inform that the ED is probing Rana Ayyub in the alleged money laundering case. The Enforcement Directorate is investigating alleged violation of foreign funding rules by Ms Ayyub while collecting donations for COVID-19 relief.
ED sources said Ayyub was summoned twice, but she only responded to one summon following which a lookout circular was issued against her. Ayyub has been issued fresh summons on Tuesday to appear in Delhi on April 1. Speaking to The Indian Express, Ayyub said, “I received the first summons in September or October last year, when the Mumbai ED was probing the forex violation case.”
Ayyub further said, “I not only met them in this matter, but also provided all the necessary documents. Then I got summons in January but at that time I was in the grip of Corona, so I had asked for more time.” According to Ayyub, the fresh summons from the ED came after she was detained at the airport. Then she was told that she would have to go back home.
Rana Ayyub said that she was also to receive the award and was also going to address the newsroom of The Guardian newspaper. Job told that I am constantly in touch with the ED and my entire plan has been public. She said that in fact, the documents that the Delhi ED is asking for, she has already submitted it to the Mumbai ED. But they keep asking her about the papers.
