Kapil Sibal files nomination for Rajya Sabha polls with Samajwadi Party’s support; says-‘I have quit Congress’

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Wednesday (May 25, 2022) in the presence of Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Kapil Sibal told the media after filing his nomination that he had quit the Congress Party on May 16 and he is filing nomination with the support of SP.

On the other hand, after the nomination of Kapil Sibal, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav while talking to news agency ANI said, “Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal was nominated for the Rajya Sabha membership from the Samajwadi Party. He is going to Rajya Sabha with the support of Samajwadi Party. First enrollment done. The names of two others for the Rajya Sabha will be announced very soon.” Kapil Sibal has filed his nomination as an independent candidate and with the support of SP.

At the same time, after filing the nomination, Kapil Sibal, while talking to the media, told that he had left the Congress on May 16 itself. Sibal said, “I understand that when the voice of an independent is raised, people will feel that they do not belong to any party. We want to form an alliance by staying in the opposition so that we oppose the Modi government. We want that such an environment should be created in 2024 so that the shortcomings of the Modi government can be brought to the public. I will try it. I have resigned from the Congress party on May 16.”

Kapil Sibal had lobbied for Azam Khan’s bail in the Supreme Court and it is believed that Kapil Sibal was persuaded by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav to defend Azam Khan. Sibal also expressed his gratitude towards Azam Khan. He said, “I have filed nomination for Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate. I am grateful to Akhilesh Yadav for supporting me. I also express my gratitude to Azam Khan.”
