India’s Lakshya Sen creates history, becomes 1st Indian in 21-years to reach Finals of prestigious All England Badminton C’ship

India’s Lakshya Sen Lakshya Sen stuns defending champion Lee Zii Jia 21-13, 12-21 21-19 in a closely-contested semi-final of the 2022 All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham. Lee, who beat Japan’s Kento Momota 21-7, 13-21, 21-11 in the men’s singles quarter-finals. World Championships bronze medallist Lakshya, on the other hand, advanced to the semis after his opponent Lu Guang Zu of China gave a walkover.

The 20-year-old Indian shuttler became the first Indian to reach the men’s singles final of the prestigious tournament in 21 years. Pullela Gopichand was the last Indian to reach the final round of All England in 2001. Sen will meet the winner of the match between Viktor Axelsen and Chou Tien-chen in the final of the tournament.

Sen had earlier stunned World No 3 and two-time medallist at World Championships, Anders Antonsen of Denmark, 21-16 21-18 on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals. The Indian continued his stellar form as he faced a stiff challenge from Malaysia’s sixth seed Lee. Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand are the only Indians to have reached the semifinals before in the prestigious event.
