Har Ghar Tiranga: Ahead of the Independence Day, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Friday replaced the traditional saffron flag in the profile picture on its social media account with the national flag. Mohan Bhagwat has also put the national flag on his Twitter profile.
It is worth noting that ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is being celebrated under the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to people to put ‘tricolor’ in their profile picture on social media between August 2 and 15.
The RSS is the ideological organization of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The stand of the RSS on the national flag was criticized by the Congress and opposition parties.
Referring to the RSS, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh had earlier this month asked whether the organization, which did not hoist the tricolor at its headquarters in Nagpur for 52 years, was in compliance with the Prime Minister’s message of putting the national flag in his profile picture on social media?
It is noteworthy that RSS’s co-in-charge of publicity department Narendra Thakur had said on Friday that the Sangh is celebrating Independence Day by hoisting the tricolor at all its offices. He said that the RSS workers are actively participating in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
The central government has appealed to the people to hoist the tricolor at their respective homes from August 13 to 15. Earlier, Sunil Ambekar, the head of the RSS’s social media department, had said that such things should not be politicised.
