An FIR has been registered against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari and his brother Soumendu Adhikari for allegedly stealing relief material from Kanthi Municipality office. According to the police, a case has been registered against the Adhikari brothers on the complaint of Ratnadeep Manna, a member of the Kanthi Nagar Administrative Board. “On May 29, 2021 at 12:30 pm, according to the instructions of Shubendu Adhikari and his brother and former city head of Kanthi Municipality, Soumendu Adhikari, the Government tripal whose estimated value is around lakhs of rupees, was taken away from municipality office godown by forcefully and illegally opening locks”.
The complaint submitted by Manna at Kanthi police station on June 1 also mentions that BJP leaders have used armed central forces in the alleged theft. Kolkata Police has arrested Rakhal Bera, a close aide of Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Bera has been arrested for cheating. The arrest of a close aide of Suvendu comes at a time when there is tension between the West Bengal government and the central government on various issues after the assembly elections. Bera is accused of cheating people by making false promises of getting jobs in the Ministry of Irrigation and Waterways during 2019. After receiving such a complaint, the Kolkata Police has arrested her during the investigation.
Bera’s arrest can bring a new storm in politics after the assembly elections in Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari or any other senior BJP leader is yet to comment on this development. Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly elections from the prestigious Nandigram seat. However, the Trinamool Congress got a big victory in the elections. Earlier, during the review meeting called regarding cyclonic storm Yaas, it took the form of controversy.
It is believed that Mamata Banerjee was not happy with the invitation of the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to the meeting. Therefore, she and the then Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay did not attend the review meeting. Mamata Banerjee had said that she had to go to a predetermined program, so she left only after taking permission from PM Modi.
However, sources in the central government had denied any such approval. The Center had also ordered Bandopadhyay to come back to Delhi for not coming to the meeting, although he resigned from the post instead of doing so. Mamata Banerjee has appointed Bandopadhyay as her personal advisor for three years.
