A Dalit family in Karnataka’s Koppal district has been fined Rs 60,000 for their only crime being that their son entered a temple and touched the idol of a Hindu god. According to local sources, the Dalit boy had touched the idol ready to be taken out for a procession at Hullerhalli village in Malur taluk.
During the festival three days ago, Chetan touched the idol and tried to carry it on his head. At this point, the villagers shooed him away and imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on his family.
The village leaders have asked the parents of Dalit boys Ramesh and Shobha not to enter the village until they pay the fine. The miscreants are also making threatening calls to the boy’s mother. The Dalit family has not yet lodged a complaint in this regard.
