The Indian quartet of Lovely Choubey (1st), Pinky (2nd), Nayanmoni Saikia (3rd) and Roopa Rani Tirkey (Skip) made a spectacular comeback in the match. Now they will face South Africa in the final. The African team defeated Fiji 16-14 to secure their place in the final.
India made a big upset by defeating New Zealand, as the Kiwi team has 40 medals in this game. They are among the top five lawn ball teams in the world. The Indian quartet was at one point trailing 0-5 in the match. Despite this, the team bounced back and took a 7-6 lead. Later this lead increased to 10-7. From here the Indian team did not look back. Earlier on Sunday, India’s lawn ball men’s doubles team of Dinesh Kumar and Sunil Bahadur advanced to the quarter-finals after winning over England in their Section C match. India finished second in the Section C table with three wins and one loss. After losing to Malaysia in the first match, they went on to win against the Falkland Islands, the Cook Islands and England. England topped the table with three wins and one loss.
Tania Choudhary, on the other hand, broke the losing streak in lawn ball with a 21-12 win over Northern Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill. Despite winning the match, she would not make it to the quarterfinals as she suffered three consecutive defeats against De Hogan (Scotland), Arthur Almond (Falkland Islands) and El Daniels (Wales).
