CWG 2022: Indian Women Lawn Bowl Team Creates History, Wins GOLD For The First Time

CWG 2022: Indian women’s lawn bowl team has created history. They won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games for the first time. The team consists of the quartet of Lovely Choubey, Pinky, Nayanmoni Saikia and Roopa Rani Tirkey. The four together first took out a strong New Zealand in the semi-final and then beat South Africa 17-10 in the final. This is India’s first medal in lawn bowls. At the same time, the country has got its fourth gold medal in Birmingham. India has also won three silver and three bronze. In this way a total of 10 medals are in the tally.

Took the lead, went down and then won Team India
The Indian women’s team at one point took an 8-2 lead in the match. It looked like it would be easy for them to win gold. South Africa came back in the eighth end. Since then, they scored six points to level the match at 8-8. Then took two more points at the 11th end to take a 10-8 lead in the match. The South African team seemed to be moving ahead in the match. In the 12th end, the Indian team leveled the match by getting two points. Here onwards it did not give any chance to the opposition team and won the match 17-10 by winning seven consecutive points.

1st match: India vs England
India’s first match in lawn ball was against England. The Indian team could not do much in this match and had to face defeat by a margin of 9-18. India had not won any medal in this sport till now. In such a situation, with this defeat, the hope of medals from the Indian players was over.

2nd match: India vs Cook Iceland
In the second match against Cook Iceland, the Indian women’s team made a spectacular comeback and won the match with a margin of 15-9. Despite the victory in this match, no one expected a medal from the Indian team, but the confidence of the players had increased.

3rd match: India vs Canada
In the third match, the Indian team defeated Canada by a margin of 17-7. With this, the women’s team had entered the medal race.

Match 4: India vs Norfolk Iceland
In the quarter final match, the Indian team defeated Norfolk Iceland 17-9. After this spectacular victory, there was a strong possibility that Team India would take some medal or the other.

Fifth match: India vs New Zealand
In the semi-final match, the Indian team made a big upset by defeating the New Zealand team by a close margin of 16-13. The chances of Indian team winning in this match were very less. The Indian team was lagging in the beginning, but later won a spectacular comeback. With this, India made it to the final and ensured a medal.

6th match: India vs South Africa
India faced South Africa in the final match and all the countrymen were expecting gold from the women’s team. Indian players performed as expected and defeated South Africa 17-10 to win the final match.
