Assam Court in Jignesh Mevani’s bail order: A court in Assam’s Barpeta has granted bail to Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in connection with the alleged assault on a woman constable. Meanwhile, the court strongly reprimanded the state police for trying to implicate Jignesh in the case. The court said that if the arbitrariness of the police is not stopped, then our state will become a police state.
Jignesh was arrested again on April 25 in connection with the attack on a police personnel, just after another Assam court granted him bail for tweeting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In that case, the Assam court made this remark on 29 April while granting him bail.
Install CCTV cameras in police vehicles
The court, in its order granting bail to Mevani, requested the Gauhati High Court to consider a petition filed against the recent police excesses in the state. It also said that it should order the Assam Police to wear body cameras and install CCTV cameras in their vehicles so that incidents can be captured when an accused is taken into custody.
Judge Aparesh Chakraborty said in the order said, “In view of the statement of the woman recorded by the magistrate, if the matter is to be taken to be true immediately, which is not true, then we will have to rewrite the criminal jurisprudence of the country.”
The court said, “The woman constable has said something else in the FIR and told a different story before the magistrate. Looking at the testimony of the woman, it seems that an urgent case has been manufactured with the aim to keep Jignesh Mevani in custody.”
Converting our hard-earned democracy into a police state is simply unthinkable,” sessions court judge Justice Aparesh Chakraborty said in the order.
The court observed that cases of police personnel shooting to death or injuring such accused have become routine in the state. The High Court may consider directing the Assam Police to rectify itself by taking certain measures.
Mevani accused the ruling party of implicating
On the other hand, after being released, Mevani said that the BJP is in power in Assam. The ruling party is behind the case of his arrest on the tweet against PM Modi and the alleged attack on the woman constable. The BJP has created a story against him by using a woman who has done a cowardly act.
Mevani said his arrest was not an ordinary case. This has been done under the direction of the political masters sitting in the PMO. The BJP is doing all this keeping in mind the Gujarat elections to be held later this year.
