Biplab Deb resigns as Tripura CM: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation to the Governor today. Yesterday Biplab Deb had met Home Minister Amit Shah, but today surprised everyone by resigning. Many BJP MLAs in Tripura were angry with Biplab Deb and its echo had reached even the high command.
Biplab’s statement after resignation
After resigning, Deb said, “I have spoken to PM Modi. I also met Home Minister Amit Shah. When the high command asked me to resign, I took this step. Assembly elections are to be held ahead, I will be engaged in its preparations. As a BJP worker, I will continue to strengthen the party.”
New leader to be announced this evening
Union minister and BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav and BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde are in Tripura as central observers. The new leader to replace Biplab Kumar Deb will be announced this evening.
Many MLAs were angry
There was dissension in the state leadership. Tussle between him and deputy CM was well known. In June last year, a group of MLAs had come to Delhi to lodge a complaint against Biplab Deb. However, then the high command refused to intervene and the state in-charge Vinod Sonkar was asked to resolve the issue.
The BJP had gained power in the state after the Communist government of Manik Sarkar was overthrown in the 2018 assembly elections. The ruling alliance in the 60-member Tripura Assembly has the BJP with 36 MLAs and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) with 8 MLAs.
