A twitter user wrote, ‘Now it is left to show sex in temples, keep sleeping Hindus !!’ This user had this tweet in view of the ongoing controversy over the Netflix series ‘A Suitable Boy’ on Vikram Seth’s book. Some people who tweeted on Twitter with the #BoycottNetflix hashtag alleged that in one scene of the series, the boy is kissing the girl in the temple courtyard. Aarti is playing in the background. This cannot be tolerated. In response to this tweet, some people started putting pictures of Hindu temples where there are naked images of sexual creations. Let us tell you about such temples, and know why such idols were built.

Lets first talk about the temples where there are sculptures in Ratikrida

There are many temples across the country with idols associated with Kamakrida. Some are popular worldwide, and some are known only by the local people. There are 5 such temples, which are famous for their special erotic sculpture.

Khajuraho Temple Complex (Madhya Pradesh)

Whenever there is mention of the idols found in Kamakrida, then the temples of Khajuraho are mentioned first. Around 85 temples were built in this temple complex. 26 of these are still in good condition. Apart from Hinduism, there are also famous temples of Jain Tirthankaras. The temples are spread over an area of about 20 square kilometers. When were built – They were built by different kings from 885 to 1125.

Who Built – These temples were built by the rulers of Chandela dynasty. The names of Yashovarman and Dhangadeva are the most prominent in the construction of temples. Most of the temples were built in the era of these rulers.

Is worship done? – This temple is not open for the worship of common people.

Virupaksha Temple, Hampi, Karnataka

Sun Temple, Konark (Orissa)

As the name itself suggests, it is built by dedicating it to Lord Surya. This is the 100-foot high chariot of the sun. It is seen as the finest specimen in the world in terms of architecture. The way the 24 wheels of Surya’s chariot are made apart from the sculptures in Kamakrida on the walls of the temple is quite special. When this temple was built, the courtyard was spread in large part. Many temples were built. But now only one big temple is left.

Where is – The Sun Temple in Konark is about 32 kilometers from Puri.

When Built – It was built in 1230.

Who built it – It is believed that the Sun Temple of Konark was built by the ruler of Eastern Ganga dynasty Narasimha Dev I between 1238 and 1250.

Is worship done? – Due to being an archaeological site, this temple is not open for the common people to worship.

The Sun Temple of Konark is quite popular among the people due to its grandeur and Rati sculpture.


Markanda Temple, Maharashtra

The idols of Kamakrida present on this temple of Lord Shiva make it special. Because of these idols, that temple is called Khajuraho of Vidarbha. This temple courtyard built on the banks of the Banganga River is spread over 40 acres. Most of the temples in the courtyard are in damaged condition. There is also a story in the surrounding people that these temples were constructed in one night.

When was built – No one knows the exact date of construction of these temples, but experts know from its architecture that it must have been built between 8th to 12th century.

Who built – These temples are believed to have been built by the kings of the Rashtrakuta dynasty, who ruled between the 8th and 12th centuries.

Is worship done? – The condition of the temple is not such that worship can be done there.
A large part of the Markanda Mahadev temple has fallen, but still it has many sculptures that make it special.

Bhoramdev Temple, Chhattisgarh
