Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami is facing difficulties in the TRP scam case. Partha Dasgupta, former CEO of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India, in a written statement to the Mumbai Police, claimed that Arnab Goswami had given him US $ 12000 (about Rs 8,75,910) for two family trips. According to the supplementary charge sheet, Dasgupta also stated that Aranb received a total of Rs 40 lakhs in three years for giving ratings in favor of the news channel.
The Mumbai police had filed a 3,600-page supplementary charge sheet on January 11, which included a forensic audit report of the BARC, alleged WhatsApp chats between Dasgupta and Goswami and statements of 59 people, including former council staff and cable operators.
Dasgupta’s statement was recorded on 27 December
Supplementary charge sheet filed against Dasgupta, former BARC CEO Romil Ramgarhia and Vikas Khanchandani, CEO of Republic Media Network. The first charge sheet was filed against 12 people in November 2020. According to the second charge sheet, Dasgupta’s statement was recorded on December 27, 2020 at the Crime Intelligence Unit office in the presence of two witnesses at five in the evening.
‘Arnab Goswami promised help in exchange for rating fix’
Dasgupta said in his statement, ‘I have known Arnab Goswami since 2004. We used to work together in Times Now. I joined BARC in 2013 as CEO. Arnab Goswami launched Republic in 2017. Even before the launch of Republic TV, he had told me about the launching plan and sought help in giving good ratings for his channel in gestures. Goswami was well aware that I know how the TRP system works. He spoke of my help in the future.
‘Arnab paid $ 12000 for two family trips’
The statement said, ‘I worked with my team to ensure the manipulation of TRP ratings, which gave Republic TV the No.1 rating. This sequence continued from 2017 to 2019. In 2017, Arnab met me at the St. Regis Hotel in Lower Parel and paid $ 6000 for my family trip to France and Switzerland. Then in 2019, Arnab met me personally in St. Regis and gave me $ 6000 for my family trip to Sweden and Denmark. ‘
Dasgupta’s lawyer denied the statement
Dasgupta told, ‘In 2017 Arnab met me at ITC Parel Hole and gave Rs 20 lakh cash. In 2018 and 2019, Goswami met me at Hotel ITC Parel and gave 10-10 lakh rupees. On Dasgupta’s statement, his lawyer Arjun Singh told ‘The Indian Express’,’ We completely reject this statement because it must have been recorded under pressure. It has no credibility in the court.
