Arnab Goswami and Kangana Ranaut could face jail term as Maharashtra Assembly’s privileges committee gets extension; BJP opposes move

The Privileges Committee was given more time on Tuesday in the privilege breach notice given to Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami and actor Kangana Ranaut. The committee has been given permission to submit the report till the last day of the next session.

Opposition opposed the government’s decision
On September 7, 2020, a breach of privilege motion was brought against Arnab Goswami on behalf of Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. On Tuesday, 15 December, there was a lot of debate in the House. Speaker Nana Patole said that if any channel makes objectionable statements about the CM of the state, it means that he is insulting the house along with that post.

However, the opposition opposed this proposal. Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis made it clear that the opposition did not agree with any statement of Arnab or Kangana. But suppression of those who raise voice against the government will not be tolerated.

BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar raised the question whether the scope of the privilege breach law is being extended? On what basis has the notice been issued against these two? On the other hand, opposition leader in the Legislative Council, Praveen Darekar, strongly opposed the proposal to extend the time to the committee.

Privilege breach motion against Arnab-Kangana Ranaut

Explain that Kangana compared Mumbai to ‘PoK’, which means PoK, after which Shiv Sena MLA Sarnaik gave a statement to break Kangana’s mouth. At the same time, Arnab had made many serious allegations against CM Uddhav Thackeray in Sushant Singh Rajput case. Along with using objectionable language, CM Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh were challenged. A proposal for breach of privilege was filed against both of them in the last monsoon session.

In this case, the committee summoned Arnab several times to present his case. But Arnab’s lawyer has challenged this motion in the Supreme Court. When this notice was mentioned in the House, the government and the opposition clashed.
